Device Overview

Name/Version: MySlicer 1.2
Author: opticon93
Description: Hi,

This is a sample slicer and re-sequencer based on groove~ and live.step.

You can choose any number of slices from 1 to 64. Sorry, no beat/transient detection.

The very top displays the Ableton track name the device is on. Below that are global parameters for groove~ and some controls for the trapezoidal slice envelope (more about these below).

In the Yellow box, you can choose any one of 4 sequences (Intro, Verse, Chorus and Outro). Each of these can be up to 64 steps. Below that you can choose the direction of the sequencer and the note length.

The Rest knob determines the probability of a step resting. At 0%, no steps are rested, all steps are played. At 70%, only 30% of the steps are played (70% are rested).

The Green area to the right has the buttons for selecting the different sequencer views: Velocity, Slice, Pitch and Speed. The arrow buttons shift the Velocity pattern left/right and up/down. Caution, raising the velocity raises it for all sequencer steps, including those that were previously zero.

The Slice view allows you to draw in the slices on each step. Below that, you can choose the number of slices.

The Scramble button rearranges the slices (between Start and End) horizontally. The Sort button lays the slices out in increasing order, making it easier to remove unwanted slices.

The Rack button resets the slices so that each plays out in order. After changing the number of slices (or sometimes the Start, End, or Length), you should probably hit the rack button for safety.

Each slice can be Pitch shifted up or down 24 semitones. Scramble and sort work as expected, while the 0 Shift button zeroes out the pitch shifts for the entire sequence.

Similarly, the playback Speed can be sequenced from .01 up to 2.0 for each slice. Speed 1 resets the speed sequence back to normal for each slice.

The number below the Volume knob is a little peak meter similar to the ones on Ableton tracks. Click on it to reset it.

Below the main sequencer is a second row devoted to Stutters. The stutter speeds are from 8n, 8nd, … 128n. Scramble and Sort work as usual and the Off button zeroes out the stutter sequencer.

There is no waveform editing, however, you can zoom in and out on it, if you want.

The first box along the top controls Time Stretching. When Time Stretching is off, changing the speed of a slice also changes the pitch, like a regular old record player. Meanwhile, the pitch sequencer has no effect on the sound.

With Time Stretching on, Pitch and Speed are adjustable independently. So, you can speed up or slow down a slice without changing pitch. Similarly, you can change the pitch without changing the speed. Or you can change both in different directions, speed it up while lowering the pitch. Lots of fun.

The Time Stretching Mode and Quality each have an effect on the sound (and CPU).

The middle section along the top has controls for Formant and Pitch Correction. From the groove~ manual: The Formant Correction button “disables/enables formant correction when pitch correction is performed”.

Similarly, Pitch Correction “enable/disables the formant-corrected chromatic intonation correction”.

Formant Scale “sets the amount of formant scaling when pitchshifting is performed”. It doesn’t say what the units are, but it goes from .5 up to 2.

Slur Time “Sets the time it takes for the correction to reach the full correction amount. Typically, notes are a bit unstable at the beginning, because the attack phase of a sound has a higher amount of noise, and because singers gradually adjust their tuning after the onset of the note. The slur time makes the pitch correction sound natural because it models this effect. Higher values will yield a slower adaptation time and it will take longer for the correction to produce the corrected pitch. However, longer slur times will also preserve vibrato better.” Similarly, this ranges from 0 to 20. I assume in milliseconds.

The Up and Dn knobs control the trapezoid~ envelope on each slice. When Up is at 0, the trapezoid increases to its max volume the fastest. When Dn is at 1, the trapezoid decreases down to zero the fastest.

If you want to lower the volume at the beginning of the slices, increase the Up knob from 0. If you want to lower the end of the slices, decrease the Dn knob from 1. The Envelope is a triangle wave when the Up and Dn are set to .5.

Share and Enjoy!!

Note: I forgot to mention that the orange button next to the Intro, Verse, Chorus, Outro menu allows it to be sequenced by my introversechorusoutro meta sequencer found here

Update: I originally put this device into beta mode because the Rack button seems to misbehave after a while. Sometimes sooner, sometimes later, sometimes never. It’s completely bizarre since the same patch works perfectly in my other devices (as far as I know). Anyway, I completely rebuilt and simplified the circuit. Please let me know in the comments.

I also added up/down/left/right arrows for each sequencer view.

ace!
thank you!!!

Your welcome. I'm glad you like it.

Hi , I couldn't test is because when I want to grab a sample , my slicer window will disappear ,instead of floating. I 'm on mac , Ableton 11

This is amazing. Excellent work and great job on the interface especially!

Thank you!

I don't know much about macs, but it should be a setting in ableton preferences:

Options->Preferences->Plugins

Set "Auto-Hide Plug-in Windows" to Off.

Unfortunately on my Live 11 the plugin window still hide despite the preferences set to OFF so I can't drag any wavefile

Hi,

I went ahead and added a sample dropbox on the inline interface, right below the "Close" button.

That should take care of it.

hello brother thanks for this, to convert it into a clip you have to record it in audio or how can I record to MIDI? Greetings.

Hi, I wasn't really planning on expanding the functionality, but I guess it could be interesting to have a midi out for other drum racks.

The easy way would be to have an export midi clip button (using Retake), similar to my Proletarian and Progenerator sequencers. But it wouldn't be a direct midi out. That would require a second device on the same track to capture the midi and pass it on to ableton.

I'm not sure which way is better, but its going to be a while either way.
