Device Overview

Name/Version: Grain Mill 0.5
Author: CaligulaCuddles
Description: This is just your run-of-the-mill granulator audio effect. I made it a good while ago and haven't updated it in some time, but I still find myself using it fairly regularly. Maybe someone else might like another one of these things.

The Grain Mill uses the brilliant munger~ object created by the generous Perry R. Cook and Gary Scavone.

The function of the device is simple enough. Here's a quick rundown of the parameters:

Size: How many milliseconds each grain lasts for.
S Variation: How many milliseconds variation there is for each grain.
Rate: The space between grains in milliseconds.
R Variation: How many milliseconds variation there is for the rate.

Delay: How large of a delay buffer is accessible for the grains. If the delay buffer is smaller than the grain size, the grains will only be as big as the delay buffer allows. If the delay buffer is much larger than the size, the grains will be created from any time as far back as the buffer allows.
Ramp: The milliseconds of volume ramping that smooths out the beginning and end of the grain instances. Higher values will create smoother sounding grains, and lower values will create quicker volume ramps (with a low ramp being potentially clicky).

Spread: Stereo spread for the grains produced.
Voices: How many voices of grains are being produced simultaneously.
Direction: The direction of the grains produced. (-1 is all reversed grains, 0 is reversed and forward grains, and 1 is only forward grains.)

Gain: The gain value of each incoming grain.
G Var: The gain variation to individual grains.

Pitch: The fundamental pitch of the grains outputted. In almost all cases, it's best to leave this at 1.
P Variation: The amount of pitch deviation from the original grain.
NOTE: These two values are a bit more complicated than they seem, and may require some getting used to. Also, the buttons in the lower right impact these. More on that shortly.

THE BUTTONS:
At the bottom right, there are eight buttons. I created these for articulating the pitch variations.
Smooth: The pitch variations will be completely random in frequency variation.
Temper: The pitch variations are closer to a tempered relationship from one another.
Oct+: This will randomly produce grains an octave above the incoming pitch. (The higher the P Variation knob, the more likely the random octaves will be generated.)
Oct+/-: This will randomly produce grains an octave above and below the incoming pitch. (The higher the P Variation knob, the more likely the random octaves will be generated.)
Oct5th: This will randomly produce grains a fifth and an octave above the incoming pitch. (The higher the P Variation knob, the more likely the random fifths and octaves will be generated.)
Oct5th+/-: This will randomly produce grains a fifth and an octave above and below the incoming pitch. (The higher the P Variation knob, the more likely the random fifths and octaves will be generated.)
Min9+: This will randomly produce grains a fifth, an octave, and a ninth above the incoming pitch. It's more of a sus2 variation. (The higher the P Variation knob, the more likely the random intervals will be generated.)
Min9+/-: This will randomly produce grains a fifth, an octave, and a ninth above the incoming pitch. It's more of a sus2 variation. (The higher the P Variation knob, the more likely the random intervals will be generated.)
NOTE: All of the above work best with the Pitch dial at 1 exactly, only using the P Variation to adjust the harmonic output.

Naturally, there's also a Dry/Wet dial and, below that, a master volume for the output. There's also a couple meters showing the dry and wet volumes to the right because, I'll be honest here, I needed to waste some space.

NOTE: I just put out an updated version of this patch, so you can probably just ignore this one.

thx
