| Description: | What is Negative Harmony? Negative harmony is a compositional process where chords and notes are flipped around a central axis, creating their polar opposites. The concept was first detailed by Swiss composer and theorist Ernst Levy in his book A Theory of Harmony, and was later popularized by multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier. The axis of a given tonality is defined by its tonic and its dominant — the midpoint between them. In the key of C major, the axis sits at the midpoint between C and G, which is a pitch falling between Eb and E. |
